Unit Commissioners
Unit Commissioners are
the best resource each unit has available to offer a rewarding Scouting
program for its youth. As experienced scout leaders, they are there to help
you with your unit's committees, any special needs your unit may have, and
with your mission to recruit and retain boys in the Scouting program. They
will work with you to determine ways to help your unit succeed.
We are constantly
trying to find experienced leaders to serve our other scouting units. There are 31 commissioner positions in the
Monticello District and only 20 are filled.
We have a critical shortage. As
a result, those Units desperately needing commissioner assistance are unable
to get it. Being a Unit Commissioner,
helping Units operate at maximum efficiency and making regular contact with
Unit leaders giving them direct access to the Stonewall Jackson Area Council
and all its resources is a very rewarding experience. The training is great, the meetings are
few, and the rewards are tremendous.
Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts, created the position of
Scoutmaster to run Scouting Units and immediately created the position of
Commissioner to help him out.
Commissioners have been with Scouting from the very beginning.
Commissioner positions are available working directly with Units as Unit
Commissioners or as an Assistant District Commissioner working on training
commissioners, being part of an assistance team, helping units get started or
re-energized. There are also positions
on the Roundtable staffs helping the Cub Scout and Boy Scout Roundtable
Commissioners.
Contact the District Commissioner Dennis Hogberg
for more information. For a copy of
the job description ask Thom to email an electronic version to you
today. You’ll be glad you did.
This is an ideal job for your underused ASM or Committee Member. The benefit is that they will come back to
your Unit far better able to assist you.
It's also a good thing to have at least one adult who is well-versed
in Council and District Administration, or who can bring good ideas from
other Units into your program. Think
about it!]
